About the North Beach Civic Association

Who We Are

The North Beach Civic Association (NBCA) is a nonpartisan neighborhood group for North Beach in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Our area runs from 75th Avenue north to the Treasure Island line at Blind Pass. We are neighbors: full-time residents, seasonal residents, renters, and local business owners who care about this end of the island. Our newsletter, The North Beachcomber, gives plain, non-partisan recaps of city meetings and community events so everyone can follow what’s happening without the noise.

A Little North Beach History

St. Pete Beach sits on Long Key, a barrier island. Until 1957, the island was split among four towns (Pass-a-Grille, Don CeSar Place, Belle Vista Beach, and St. Petersburg Beach) plus unincorporated county land. On July 9, 1957, voters merged them into the City of St. Petersburg Beach by a five-vote margin, 758 to 753. In 1994, residents shortened the name to St. Pete Beach.

Our end of the island grew up around Blind Pass, the inlet between Long Key and Treasure Island. It was a natural, shifting pass until 1936, when the first channel dredging and rock jetty project was completed. Upham Beach, at the north end of St. Pete Beach, is named for the Upham family, whose Upham Company filled a mangrove swamp in 1936 to build the Corey Avenue business district.

Storms are part of our story too. The 1921 Tampa Bay hurricane brought a storm surge of up to 11 feet to the region. In 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton flooded homes and businesses up and down the island, and North Beach is still rebuilding.

Our Story

Today we are re-launching the association to give North Beach neighbors a shared, reliable place to stay informed and get involved.

How We Build a Stronger Community

  • Informed neighbors: clear, fact-based recaps of City Commission and board meetings, with a focus on zoning, coastal management, parking, and budgets.

  • Beach cleanups: caring for Upham Beach, Blind Pass, and our shoreline together.

  • Social meetups: chances for neighbors to meet face to face.

  • Town halls: open forums on zoning, development, and coastal protection, where every viewpoint is welcome.

  • Welcoming new residents: helping newcomers find their footing in North Beach.

  • Partnerships: working with the City of St. Pete Beach and local businesses on shared goals.
